The history of the church that has gone through numerous wars and fires (the last one in 1941) dates back to the Middle Ages. Swedish King Karl XII planted three lime trees by the church during the Great Northern War. Dr Johan Kõpp, later rector of the University of Tartu and archbishop of the EELC, served as a minister here from 1909 onwards.
